International Research Symposium – Uva Wellassa University 2018

“Emerging Technologies for an Innovative Green Economy”

Uva Wellassa University, which has engraved unique features in Sri Lankan higher education sector, leads the theme of value addition to national resource base. Taking the pride in producing well rounded graduates  to the nation, UWU has developed innovative solutions to bridge the gaps in the knowledge among undergraduates.
The Uva Wellassa University is organizing 2nd “International Research Symposium-2018” (IRSUWU-2018), which is scheduled to be held on 1 st and 3 rd February 2018 with the theme of “Emerging Technologies for an Innovative Green Economy”. This event leads to gather the scientists and the industry personnel to a same platform to initiate an awareness and discussion on the scientific findings and innovation.
This year, the Faculty of Science and Technology plays the leading role in organizing the IRSUWU-2018. Uva Wellassa University offers thirteen degree programmes and these degree programmes aim to develop knowledge, values, conceptual understanding and skills in students, necessary for a range of careers in their particular fields capable of planning, designing and implementing new technologies in value addition to national resource base. It
fosters researches in Material Science, Mechatronics, Natural Products, Computer Science, Industrial Information, Food Science, Biology, Engineering, Earth Science, Agriculture, Management Science and Entrepreneurship in a dynamic interdisciplinary atmosphere. The degree programmes are providing the students with opportunities for technology oriented career to fulfill the demand of local and international market. All the undergraduates are continuously involved in researches and development projects and their findings and innovations will be presented at this scientific forum.

Avon Pharmo chem Workshop

Workshop on “Laboratory Safety Practices and Management and Basic Molecular Biology Techniques”

On the 12th and 13th of December 2017, Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka in collaboration with Avon Pharmo Chem Pvt Ltd organized a two day work shop entitled “Laboratory Safety Practices and Management and Basic Molecular Biology Techniques” at the Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, Saliyapura, Anuradhapura.

The purpose of this workshop was to provide a basic theoretical and practical experience on laboratory management and molecular biology and further understanding of safety practices and other related techniques in molecular biology to technical officers and laboratory support staff of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka.  The 50 workshop participants represented the Faculty of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Agriculture of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka.

The participants of the workshop were given a descriptive insight in to the safe handling of many laboratory equipment.

During the workshop, the participants were given a descriptive insight on  safe handling/use of laboratory chemicals, glassware and consumables and safety management , key factors and operation of  Laboratory equipment (autoclave, fume hood, bio safety cabinet, PCR hood, Laminar flow, centrifuge, incubators, freezers, micropipette)   through lectures and hands-on training. In addition the participants were given a thorough understanding of the safe laboratory practices. Further they were introduced to basic molecular biology techniques which included a hands-on training on Polymerase Chain reaction which included DNA extraction, PCR amplification, Horizontal electrophoresis and DNA visualization

Avon Organizes a Special Workshop on Laboratory Glassware & Chemicals and Laboratory Waste Disposal

Avon Pharmo Chem in collaboration with Sri Lanka Universities’ technical Officers’ union organized a special workshop on laboratory glassware & chemicals, laboratory designing, optical microscopy and imaging techniques and handling with the participation of technical officers of  Faculty of Applied Science, Faculty of Medical Sciences and Faculty of Technology of University of Sri Jayewardenepura on 01st August 2017.

A team from Avon pharma chem in collaboration with the Technical Officers Welfare Society of University of Peradeniya, conducted a special seminar  on “the Laboratory Technologies & Basics of Nanotechnology”at Agriculture Biotechnology center, University of Peradeniya on 14th May 2017.

Around 120 technical officers from the University of Peradenya, Mahaweli Authority, Seetha Eliya, Bandarawela, and Makandura research centers participated this one day event.

Resource person Mr. Benjnamin Wong from Hettich Lab Technology speaking on topic “Is your incubator safe to use?” shared his views on safety features of modern day laboratory incubators and the patented technologies used in Hettich incubators. He also talked about how we can choose the best incubator for our laboratories by looking at the various specifications of these instruments.

During the second session Dr. Buddhika Dissanayake from the Department of Physics, Faculty of science, University of Peradeniya discussed the latest developments with regards to the Nanotechnology under the topic “Basics of Nanotechnology”.

The National Conference on Vector Biology 2016 organized by Department of Zoology, faculty of Science of the university of Jaffna was held on 10th February 2017 at University of Jaffna. After the panel discussion, a new society called Vector Biology Society was inaugurated with the appointments of office bearers. Dr Gajapathy presented the draft constitution and would be confirmed in near future.
